Bout of Books: Day 6

6:30 pm

I didn't post an update for yesterday because it was a dismal reading day (but a great day otherwise). I only read about 30 pages, what with spending time with family before they left town.

Today has been much better. I still haven't gotten as much read as I might have liked, but I've read about 100 pages and I still have time to read more. I'm losing hope for finishing Bleak House by tomorrow night, but I'll still finish it in the next few days without a problem. I'm excited! I have other books I want to get started on, but I want to wait until I'm finished with Bleak House--otherwise, I'm afraid I'll abandon it in favor of faster-paced books, and I'm so close to the end! ("So close" meaning 200 pages, which really does feel close for this book...)

3:15 am

Yes, it's into the wee hours of the morning, and I'm still awake. The hubs and I were feeling adventurous, so we went to a super-late showing of Iron Man 3 at the dollar theater. It was really fun! Not to mention, I got a few more pages read since my last update and so the total for today is around 140. I'm sure I could have done better, but I feel pretty good about that, especially for Bleak House, which is good but not exactly a page turner. (Okay, parts are...well, I'll save it for a later post.) Anyway, I'm not the fastest reader in the world so 140 is pretty good for me. Now I only have about 150 pages left in the book!

  1. A dollar theater! You have a dollar theater! I have zero second-run theaters around me, and I'm so bummed.

    1. Yes!! I grew up without one, and it's the most marvelous thing! I'm pretty sure we would be broke by now without it; we (particularly my husband) love going to movies.

    2. We had both a second-run theater and a dollar theater when I was a kid, and when we were in high school, my friends and I frequented both a lot. I think there's one about 40 minutes from where I live now, but that adds too much time to the movie for it to work for me right now. Maybe when the kids are older, especially since then I'd be paying for more than just my ticket. My hubby doesn't love movies like I do, so he sees about one a year in the theater.

    3. I hardly went to movies in the theater growing up (my parents had a lot of kids and it cost a LOT of money to take us to movies), so I still see going to a movie as a huge treat. I hardly went before I got married, but my husband is the kind of person who would go to a movie by himself for fun. (It strikes me as very odd, but maybe more people do it than I think.) Plus, we have a small TV, so Redbox isn't as much fun anymore...

    4. When I was a baby and toddler, my parents generally took me with them to the movies -- I know I saw The Man from Snowy River and Chariots of Fire in the theater, and they took me to I think Lady and the Tramp too. I probably saw more, but those are the ones I remember having seen. (I don't actually remember seeing them, though.) I saw like two movies in the theater as a kid, and then nothing until I was a teen.

I see most movies by myself now. I started going alone a year after we got married, when we moved to a small town and lived 7 blocks from a sweet theater with 8 or 9 screens. My hubby doesn't love movies like I do, and is perfectly happy seeing most of them on our little TV, so I realized I would just have to go alone. I think the first time or two that I did so, I felt a little odd, like the workers were thinking, "What's wrong with her, that she has no one to see a movie with?" But now, after ten years of going mostly by myself, it actually feels a bit weird to have someone along. There's this obligation to share the armrest, the question of whether or not to stay through all the credits, and... yeah.

    5. Ha, ha! That's true. I make my husband stay through all the credits now. I insist on having the "full experience." :P

    6. Depending on the movies you see, there may also be a "stinger" at the end that you don't want to miss :-D

    7. Very true! I'm glad we stayed through the end of Iron Man!
